Tips for Helping Guests Avoid a DUI this Holiday Season

The holidays are nearly upon us, which means it is time to start planning all of those seasonal gatherings and parties. For many, this means having fun with friends and family while eating copious amounts of food and drinking alcoholic beverages. While this is all well and good for those who behave responsibly, the fact is that not everyone takes the proper precautions to ensure they get home safely, without putting others in danger. In fact, drunk driving accidents and deaths often increase during this time of year.

If you are hosting a holiday party this year, here are some tips that will help keep your guests safe and prevent them from driving home drunk:

1.Make sure they plan ahead: Be considerate and ask how your guests plan on returning home if you see them drinking. These days, there are so many easy and affordable ways to return home safely, whether you choose to use a ridesharing app like Uber or Lyft, or call a cab. There is no reason why anyone should drive home drunk, so make sure these arrangements are made early on to ensure the safety and well-being of your guests. They will thank you for it once they sober up.

2.Offer them the opportunity to sleep over: If they absolutely refuse to use a ridesharing service, or are worried about leaving their vehicle behind, let them spend the night at your place to avoid a DUI or worse.

3.Serve plenty of food: Drinking on an empty stomach will only make a person get more inebriated at a faster pace, so make sure to serve plenty of food to help your guests absorb the alcohol better.

4.Cut off the alcohol: Some time before you plan on ending your party, cut off the supply of alcohol to your guests. This will give them some time to sober up if they decide to drive home.

5.Pay attention to your guests: Part of being a responsible host is knowing when your guests are drunk and not allowing it to get out of hand. If you would rather enjoy your party than keep an eye on your guests, hire a bartender to manage how much each guest consumes.
